Hi! I am Tamar Sleven, a freelance illustrator from the Netherlands. My illustration work is characterized by offbeat, absurdist humour, a maximalist approach to colour and a deep appreciation of all things weird and wonderful.
I became an illustrator in a roundabout way: I studied photography at the Royal Academy of Art. After graduating I started on a diverse creative career path, working as a photographer, graphic designer, editor, writer and digital producer in the Netherlands and abroad.
My illustrations are all traditionally made, starting with a pen drawing which then is coloured in using different media. I often use collage as well, adding found images, or drawing details separately and then pasting them in to get a layered effect.
I like telling stories through my art, and I love it when my work makes people smile or scratch their head in puzzlement - both is even better.
